Servant leadership is also a concept I learned while getting my bachelor’s degree. The concepts of servant leadership have equipped me tremendously to be a great leader, and follower. Jesus was a leader and a follower. One thing about Cal Baptist that I wish I had more learning about is servant leadership. I saw it pop up this time for the first time since I have been a student here. At my last school, Hope International University, it was a main topic of discussion for every single class and we had to apply it to whatever we were learning. I appreciated learning about servant leadership.

Social media and servant leadership: How can we be servants using social media. I took this upon myself recently, while using my Linkedin. Sometimes I see a post that bothers me, its typically a transitioning veteran looking for work. Sometimes it’s just someone out of work, desperate looking for a job. I know how that feels after being laid off in 2013, when the Department of Justice had national budget cuts, our division that was funded by DOJ laid off everyone, including me. I was 8 months pregnant – but it worked out for me, as I got to spend time with my new daughter. After that I decided to be an independent consultant to a govt. program (Department of Labor) to teach employment skills to veterans. I like workforce and the employment field, and I have dabbled in it since 1998, when Bill Clinton passed welfare reform. I was an employment specialist and supervising caseworker for a County welfare to work program.

When I see people on LinkedIn that are asking for employment help, I try to offer to review their resume, and I give them pointers for job search techniques. I also have just plain redone peoples resumes, because it was clear to me that the resume was why they didn’t get the call for a interview. Job searching is a new market now too- and computers will screen you out if you don’t have key words. When I have helped someone for free (which its always free), I always have people thank me, some do, some don’t (even though I know they are thankful). When they offer to thank me, I tell them to thank Jesus, because He allowed me to have this skill and I use it for His glory, that it’s my calling and natural talent and ability, and I’m glad to help. In my mind and heart, I know its servant leadership, like showed in Mathew, where the bible says when you do this for the “least of them, you do it for me”.

I think servant leadership can be used in social media in numerous creative ways, and it’s up to us as Christs followers and His handymen – eyes and ears, to find ways to reach people for Jesus through servant leadership. Social media is a great avenue and tool to reach the lost and bring them into the sheepfold.
